Piers Morgan fumes that VAR is ‘wrecking football’ as Arsenal goal is disallowed

Piers Morgan fumed that VAR is “wrecking football” after Arsenal’s goal was disallowed at Brentford.

The Gunners thought they had broken the deadlock late in the first half when Leandro Trossard headed the ball home. Star man Bukayo Saka had whipped in the ball into the Brentford penalty box, finding Gabriel Jesus only for the Brazilian to nod it straight at Mark Flekken in goal.

Flekken parried the ball, but only as far as Trossard, and the Belgian made no mistake from point blank range. But after a VAR check, the Gunners were left fuming as the goal was chalked off for offside.

Replays with the help of VAR tools showed that Trossard’s toe was centimetres ahead of the ball when Jesus had headed it goalwards – before the Belgian winger followed it up to score from the rebound.

As such, the Gunners went into the break level as the pressure mounted on them to find another breakthrough in the second half. And outspoken Arsenal fan Morgan couldn’t help but vent his anger towards VAR on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Morgan wrote: “FFS…. VAR wrecking football yet again. I hate it so much.”

While many Arsenal supporters couldn’t disagree with the laws of the game on this occasion, some joined Morgan in tweeting: “VAR hates Arsenal,” and: “VAR wrecking football yet again.”

Others added: “VAR IS CORRUPT, PASS IT ON,” and: “What a joke.”

It resulted in a nervy spectacle for the north London faithful as they almost conceded in the second half, but for an Oleksandr Zinchenko block on the line. But they were saved in the 89th minute by super-sub Kai Havertz, who headed in another sumptuous Saka cross to seal all three points.
