CrossFit California City Announces 2nd Annual
Junior / Senior High Summer Boot-camp Schedule
CrossFit California City (CFCC) will be hosting a strength & conditioning boot-camp for Jr. and Sr. High student athletes to help prepare them for the 2010-2011 sports year. This nine-week long camp will begin on Saturday, 5 June 2010 at 10am when each athlete will learn the movements necessary to perform the workouts which will follow every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:00pm and Saturdays at 10am. The first instructional session is expected to last three to four hours, with subsequent weekday sessions lasting approximately one hour, and Saturday sessions lasting from one to two hours. Priority placement will be given to Desert Jr./Sr. High soccer players.
During the nine weeks, your student athlete will show improvement in the following areas, regardless of his or her sport(s) of choice, fully dependent upon their attendance and dedication:
- Cardio-vascular/Respiratory Endurance
- Stamina
- Strength
- Flexibility
- Speed
- Power
- Coordination
- Accuracy
- Agility
- Balance
This is a co-ed boot camp, and will be scaled for age, ability and injury if necessary. Any athlete, at any level of fitness experience, is encouraged to attend. The camp will be based on the principle CrossFit prescription of “constantly varied, functional movements, performed at high intensity”. We understand the need to be cautious with growing children, and will be very cautious with those athletes going through growth spurts and the like. Athletes will be stronger and faster, but in most cases, leaner than when they arrived. Football players will benefit greatly from this camp, (The fourth quarter belongs to CrossFitters!), however this is not a “bulk up” camp.
Your athlete will receive some limited “classroom” time devoted to the science behind fitness and the body, as well as instruction on “performance-based” nutrition. There will be an opening fitness assessment and a closing fitness assessment to accurately measure your athlete’s performance gains over the 9 weeks. There will be shorter, goal-oriented workouts that will repeat a few times during the camp to track progress. Athletes will be required to maintain a “nutrition journal” to log everything that passes their lips during the camp. We will highlight areas of improvement in their diets and give them healthy, “performance enhancing” food choices they can (and should) incorporate into their diets.
Your athletes will all leave boot-camp as “CrossFitters” and will blow their coaches away when practice season starts. Our ultimate hope is that this camp will be a small part of your athlete’s choice to stay active, eat right, and live a long, healthy life as a result.
The cost of the boot-camp is $250.00 per athlete. A deposit of $50.00 per athlete is due by 21 May 2010 in order to properly plan for the boot-camp. $20 of the deposit is non-refundable to pay for T-shirts. All athletes will receive a boot-camp T-shirt and a certificate of completion at the end of the camp. The balance is due in full prior to the start of camp. The length of the camp is designed to accommodate vacations and missed days during the summer, while still providing the bulk of the benefit.

What are people saying about CrossFit for sports Strength and Conditioning?
“CrossFit is an ideal strength and conditioning program for high school student-athletes. There is no better program for raising athletes’ general physical preparation. Athletes on this program demonstrate an increased ability to generate power and an increased ability to sustain high power output. This means a more explosive athlete and one who can execute their sport skills at a higher level for longer periods at practice and in competition. Another immeasurable benefit is the mental toughness developed from CrossFit… everything is possible to a CrossFit-trained athlete and they will continue to compete and push further long after other athletes will have thrown in the towel and laid down for their opponent.”
~Josh Everett, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, University of California, Riverside
“There is simply nothing more important to our children’s long term health and success in life than an increased level of general physical fitness. For our kids it means stronger bones and muscles, increased mental acuity, and a increased level of self esteem and confidence. For our young athletes increased general physical fitness means they can out run, out shoot, out play, simply out work their opponents.”
~Jeff Martin, CrossFit Kids HQ, USA Weightlifting Club Coach
Q&A with Lucianne Crenshaw, Owner of CrossFit Allegiance in Medford, OR, former Division I Soccer player and High School Soccer Coach
CFCC: If you could go back to your competitive Soccer playing/coaching years, knowing what you know now, what major things would you do differently?
Coach Lu: I would be functionally sound!!! I would get rid of the machines, the isolation, I would take all CrossFit has offered me and implement it into my training. Oh and I would train…not just for soccer but for functionality because 7 years after my college career is over I am fitter, faster, stronger and healthier than I ever was then.
CFCC: Concerning high school soccer players, what positive results do you feel they will see most if they incorporate CrossFit into their conditioning?
Coach Lu: It decreased my injury rates 10 fold, squatting properly was a huge change. I had girls running down the field that stayed on their feet and would run by girls all day long. They were overall way better performers on the field. Harder shots, won more balls in the air, faster on and off the ball, longer balls, tougher in battles.
CFCC: Since we train with girls the most, what specific issues/benefits do you feel female student athletes will gain by incorporating CrossFit?
Coach Lu: Girls need to be stronger. When they hear they need to get strong they hear they will get bigger. That’s not the case. Stronger is more functional, is faster, is jumping higher, is holding girls off the ball, its all of it. It’s not bulk (but) the ability to function on the field at a higher level. ACL (injuries) were a huge issue and once the girls started squatting properly they were gone from the picture. Overall injury decreased as well as the girls were just stronger. We were chosen to be 2nd to last in the conference and we ended up shocking everyone and taking 1st.
CFCC: How have you used CF for injury prevention/re-hab?
Coach Lu: I have used it to just overall strengthen so injuries really don’t occur as much. Re-hab I leave to the physical therapists then get them moving again after they have been cleared by a doc.
